Lime Rendering and Limecrete Floors

Our lime rendering and limecrete flooring services are rooted in traditional building conservation principles, using breathable, compatible materials that protect and preserve historic fabric. Suitable for heritage and listed buildings, lime-based systems allow moisture to evaporate naturally, helping to reduce decay while maintaining the structural and aesthetic integrity of traditional construction. Each project is approached with careful attention to historic character, material compatibility, and long-term building health.

Lime render is a traditional breathable coating made from lime, specialist sands, and water that is applied to the exterior walls of a building to provide protection and weather resistance. Unlike cement-based renders, it allows moisture to evaporate naturally, making it particularly suitable for historic buildings constructed with traditional materials such as brick, flint, stone, and lime mortar.

Lime render can crack due to rapid drying, incorrect mix proportions, poor preparation of the background, or movement in the underlying structure. It can also be caused by exposure to strong sun, wind, or frost during curing, or by using a mix that is too strong or not compatible with the substrate.

A limecrete floor is a breathable alternative to concrete, made using lime-based binder mixed with aggregates and often laid over insulation and a capillary-breaking layer. It is commonly used in historic or solid-wall buildings because it allows moisture to move through the floor rather than becoming trapped, helping to reduce damp while supporting traditional, breathable construction methods.
