With over forty years of experience to call upon, Ernest Barnes is ideally placed to share their knowledge, skills, and experience. Having served an indentured apprenticeship, David appreciates the importance of knowledge transmission and acquisition within the context of heritage skills; he has an innate ability to share the nuances of traditional craft practices. David has undertaken and delivered the following training for leading heritage bodies and universities:

  • SPAB Summer School – Guest speaker: 2017 to present.
  • National Trust – Building Surveyors’ Training days.
  • RIBA Southern Region Conservation Architects Group – delivery of on-line lectures.
  • Mentoring of Building Conservation Masters students.
  • Supervision of dissertations on MSc Building Conservation, York University.
  • Guest speaker on MSc Building Conservation Programme – lime and brickwork modules.
  • Publication of several articles on historic brick and flintwork in various journals and magazines.
